Homemade German Mulled Wine

Mulled Wine is an alcoholic hot beverage, which is drunk mainly during Christmas & the Advent season on Christmas markets. The basis of the hot wine punch is red wine, which gets its characteristic taste through many Christmas spices (such as cinnamon, star anise and cloves) and citrus fruits.

In today’s post I show you how simple & easy it is to make a delicious Homemade German Mulled Wine as from the Christmas market. Have fun!

Homemade German Mulled Wine

Ingredients for 4 servings:

…for the mulled wine:

  • 1 liter red wine (semidry)
  • 2 organic oranges
  • 1 organic lemon
  • 75 grams brown sugar
  • 1 sachet bourbon vanilla sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 star anise

…for garnishing:

  • 4 candy canes
  • Sugar for the sugar rim

Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:

  • Pot or saucepan with lid for the mulled wine
  • Possibly drinking straws
  • Bowls for water & sugar
  • Cups or glasses to serve the mulled wine

Instructions for the Homemade German Mulled Wine:




…preparations:

With a sharp knife cut oranges & lemon into thin slices.

…for the mulled wine:

In a small pot or saucepan combine orange & lemon slices along with 1 cinnamon stick, 75 grams brown sugar, 1 sachet bourbon vanilla sugar, 4 cloves & 1 star anise. Next pour in 1 liter semidry red wine, give everything a quick stir & heat up over medium heat, but do not bring to a boil.

The mulled wine just needs to get hot, so regulate or switch back the temperature in time and then let the mulled wine steep for about 30 minutes with the lid closed over low heat, stirring occasionally.




…for the sugar rim:

Prepare a small bowl with water & another bowl with sugar. Then dip the mulled wine glasses with the rim only into the water and afterwards into the bowl with sugar.

Fill the done mulled wine into the prepared glasses & garnish every glass with a candy cane & a drinking straw.

    Dein Rezept hat mir jetzt schon einige Weihnachten versüsst. Seit zwei Jahren mache ich nun meinen Glühwein selbst gemacht. Meist noch mit Zimt und Kardamom. Kein Vergleich zu der Plörre aus dem Supermarkt und nicht mal zu der, die man so für 5 EUR auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt bekommt. Mittlerweile meiden wir diesen, legen alle zusammen und machen eine kleine private Glühweinsause bei uns zuhause. So auch sicherlich wieder dieses Weihnachten.
