Shepherd’s Pie is a classic casserole of Irish & British cuisine & basically consists of 2 layers, a spicy mince sauce & a layer of mashed potatoes.
After layering, the Shepherd’s pie casserole is placed in the preheated oven and baked until golden brown. Have fun cooking!

Ingredients for 4 – 6 servings:
…for ground beef layer:
- 750 grams ground beef
- 400 milliliters beef stock
- 1 large onion
- 2 – 3 cloves garlic
- 1 heaping tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 heaping tablespoon flour
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 teaspoon rosemary
- 1 teaspoon sweet paprika powder
- Oil for frying
- Salt & pepper
…for potato layer:
- 1 kilogram floury potatoes
- 150 milliliters milk
- 75 grams grated Parmesan cheese
- 50 grams butter
Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:
- Pot for potatoes
- Pasta strainer
- Large pan for the ground beef mixture
- Potato masher
- Grater for the Parmesan cheese
- Suitable baking dish
Instructions:
…for potato layer:
Preheat the oven to 200°C (top/bottom heat). Peel the potatoes and dice them if necessary. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the potatoes gently for 15 – 20 minutes.
Drain the cooked potatoes over a pasta strainer and put them back to the pot along with 150 milliliters of milk, 75 grams of grated Parmesan cheese & 50 grams of butter, then mash everything until you got a creamy potato mash.
…for meat sauce:
Peel off 1 large onion & chop finely. Peel off 2 – 3 garlic cloves & also chop finely. Heat up a large pan with a dash of oil and sweat onions and garlic over medium heat for 1 – 2 minutes until glassy.
Next increase the heat a bit, add the ground meat & fry for 4 – 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, then season well with a teaspoon each of thyme, rosemary & sweet paprika & a good pinch of salt & pepper.
When done, stir in a heaping tablespoon each of tomato paste & flour & finally deglaze everything with 400 milliliters of beef stock. Allow the beef stock to boil down almost completely & cook until you got a creamy & thick beef sauce, then remove from heat.
…for Shepherd’s Pie:
Pour the beef sauce into a suitable baking dish, then top the beef layer with the prepared mashed potatoes by tablespoons & spread carefully.
Place the Shepherd’s Pie in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes and bake until golden brown. Take the done Shepherd’s Pie out of the oven, allow to cool a bit in the dish and then cut into pieces and serve. Have fun cooking!
