In today’s post, I’ll show you a vegetarian recipe for gnocchi with tomato sauce from the oven. The gnocchi are served with a simple tomato sauce in a baking dish and then gratinated in the oven with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
Alternatively, you could simply mix the grated cheese just before serving with the gnocchi & allow the cheese to melt in the hot tomato sauce. Have fun cooking!

Ingredients for 4 servings:
- 800 grams gnocchi (from the cooling shelf)
- 2 cans chopped tomatoes (each about 400 grams)
- 1 ball mozzarella cheese
- 50 grams grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 onion
- 1 – 2 clove(s) garlic
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- Salt, sugar & pepper to taste
- Oil for frying
- Fresh basil for garnishing
Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:
- Pan or saucepan for tomato sauce
- Grater for Parmesan cheese
- Suitable baking dish
Instructions:
…for tomato sauce:
Preheat oven to 200 C (top/bottom heat). Peel off 1 onion and chop finely. Peel off 1 – 2 clove(s) garlic and also chop finely. Slice the mozzarella and grate the Parmesan with a grater. For the tomato sauce, heat up a pan or a saucepan adding a dash of oil, add the garlic and onions to the pan and sweat over medium heat for 2 – 3 minutes until glassy, stirring occasionally.
Next, pour in 2 cans chopped tomatoes, bring to a simmer & allow to gently simmer for 4 – 5 minutes. Finally, season the tomato sauce with 1 teaspoon of oregano and a pinch of salt, sugar & pepper and then remove the pan from heat.
…for oven baked gnocchi:
Put gnocchi into a suitable baking dish, pour over the tomato sauce & mix everything a bit together, then top with mozzarella slices & grated Parmesan cheese. Bake the gnocchi in the preheated oven for about 20 – 25 minutes until golden brown & cheese is melted. Get the done gnocchi out of the oven, spread on deep plates & serve garnished with some fresh basil. Have fun cooking!
