A meatloaf is a pot roast made from ground meat, which is known in many variations in many countries.

To prepare combine the ground meat with breadcrumbs, eggs, onions and spices until you got a smooth mixture. Afterwards shape the mixture into a loaf & cook on the stove or in the oven, with or without added liquid. Have fun cooking!

Meat Loaf with Sauce

Ingredients for 1 meatloaf:

  • 700 grams ground meat (half pork/half beef)
  • 500 milliliters vegetable stock
  • 150 milliliters red wine
  • 75 grams breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 – 2 clove(s) garlic
  • Each a heaping tablespoon of mustard & tomato paste
  • A heaping teaspoon sweet paprika powder
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt, pepper & sugar
  • 2 – 3 sprigs fresh parsley for garnishing

Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:

  • Pfanne für die Zwiebeln

Peel onion & chop finely. Also peel of 2 cloves garlic & chop finely. Next, heat up a pan adding a dash of oil & sweat onions and garlic over medium heat until glassy, stirring occasionally. Then remove from heat & allow to cool slightly.

…for the meat loaf:

In a large mixing bowl combine 700 grams ground meat along with the cooled onions, 2 eggs, 75 grams breadcrumbs, 1 heaping tablespoon mustard, 1 heaping teaspoon sweet paprika powder & a good pinch of salt & pepper & mix well with your hands.

Next, place the meat mixture on a kitchen board and shape it to a roast or loaf. Then heat up a large pan or pot adding a good dash of oil and gently roast the meatloaf over medium heat until brown & crispy for a few minutes.

Once the meat loaf is browned all around add 1 heaping tablespoon tomato paste to the pan, also deglaze everything with 150 milliliters red wine & 500 milliliters vegetable stock. Bring the sauce to a boil & then cook the meatloaf over low to medium heat & the lid closed for about 50 – 60 minutes until done.

After about 50 minutes lift the meat loaf out of the pan, slice up with a sharp knife & dish up along with sauce & mashed potatoes. Possibly garnish meatloaf with finely chopped parsley. I wish you lots of fun cooking 😉
