Italian Meatballs with Tomato Sauce

A few weeks ago I showed you a super simple recipe for delicious meatballs with creamy mushroom sauce & because you liked this recipe so much here is another recipe for meatballs this time with an Italian flavoured tomato sauce.

The meatballs & sauce are cooked in the same pan, which makes both the sauce and the meatballs taste even more intense. Have fun cooking!

Italian Meatballs with Tomato Sauce

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 750 grams ground meat (half beef/half pork)
  • 75 grams breadcrumbs
  • 75 grams grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Italian herb mixture
  • 2 cans chopped tomatoes
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 – 3 cloves garlic
  • Salt, sugar & pepper
  • Oil for frying
  • Parsley for garnish

Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Large frying pan + lid
  • Spatula

Put 750 grams of ground meat together with 75 grams of breadcrumbs, 75 grams garted Parmesan cheese, 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon Italian herb mixture & a good pinch of salt & pepper in a mixing bowl & knead with your hands until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Then shape 8 balls of the same size from the meat dough and set aside. Peel off 1 large onion & 2 – 3 cloves garlic & chop finely. Finely chop parsley & set aside until serving.

Heat up a large pan with a good dash of oil and fry the meatballs over medium heat for 4 – 5 minutes, turning them once. When done lift them out of the pan & set aside until further use.

Next, put onions & garlic in the pan & sweat for another 2 – 3 minutes, turning occasionally. Then pur in 2 cans chopped tomatoes, season well with salt, sugar & pepper to taste & finally give the meatballs back into the pan.

Bring the tomato sauce to a boil and allow everything to simmer slowly with the lid closed over low heat for about 15 – 20 minutes until the meatballs are cooked and the sauce has reached a creamy consistency. Serve the meatballs with tomato sauce garnished with some chopped parsley & bread. Have fun cooking!
