In several of my last recipe posts I’ve shown you a lot of different on pot or one pan recipes, for example a One Pot Pasta with Prawns or a One Pot Djuvec Rice Pan with Paprika and Peas.
Today I’ll show you a one pot version of a Swabian classic dish, namely, we cook cheese spaetzle in a one pot version, extra creamy & extra cheesy. I wish you lots of fun cooking 😉
Cooked/Baked today: Cheesy One Pot “Spätzle” Pasta with Onions
Difficulty: Easy – Medium
Preparation Time: 25 minutes
Category: Main Dishes, Veggie Recipes, One Pot Pasta Recipes, Pasta & Noodle Recipes, Swabian Cuisine
Our Recipe rating:
Ingredients for 4 servings:
- 500 grams Swabian “Spätzle” noodles (for cooking)
- 1 liter water
- 200 milliliters cream
- 200 grams of grated cheese (e.g. mountain cheese, Emmentaler or Gouda)
- 2 – 3 onions
- 25 grams freid onions
- Salt & pepper
- Butter & oil for frying
- Fresh chives for garnish
Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:
- Large pan or pot with lid
Instructions:
Peel off onions and roughly chop. Cut the chives into fine rolls & set aside until serving. Heat up a large pan or saucepan with a generous piece of butter & a dash of oil & brown the onions in it for 4 – 5 minutes, turning them occasionally.
Next, add the spaetzle noodles, 1 liter of water, 200 milliliters of cream, 25 grams fried onions & 2 teaspoons of salt to the pan, then bring everything to a boil & simmer very slowly over low heat with the lid closed for 12 – 15 minutes.
Stir the spaetzle pan from time to time so that nothing can burn on the bottom of the pot & continue simmering until the noodles are cooked & have absorbed the liquid almost completely.
Finally, season everything with salt & pepper to taste, remove the pan from the stove, add 200 grams of grated cheese & allow the cheese to melt in the pan until it pulls strings by forking in & then dish up the cheesy spaetzle pan garnished with fresh chives. Have fun cooking!

Sehr lecker! Ich habe noch Champignons dazu gemacht und statt Sahne Creme fraiche verwendet… Das gibt es jetzt auf jeden Fall öfter 🙂
