Today’s post is all about the most popular side dish of the Balkan kitchen, namely “Djuvec” or “Duvec” rice. Today I’m going to show you a vegetarian one pot “Djuvec” rice pan with peppers and peas. Have fun cooking!

Ingredients for 4 servings:
- 750 milliliters water
- 250 grams long grain rice
- 250 grams peas (frozen)
- 200 grams ajvar (mild)
- 1 can chopped tomatoes
- 2 red bell peppers
- 2 yellow bell peppers
- 1 large onion
- 2 – 3 cloves garlic
- A teaspoon each of sweet & spicy paprika powder
- 1 heaping teaspoon savory
- Oil for frying
- Salt & pepper
- Parsley for garnish
Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:
- Large frying pan
…for rice stir-fry:
Wash, core and cut the peppers into bite-size pieces. Peel onion & chop finely. Peel garlic & chop finely. Finely chop parsley & put aside for the garnish. Take 250 grams of peas out of the freezer and set aside to defrost.
Heat up a large pan with a dash of oil, add the onions & garlic to the pan & sweat for 2 – 3 minutes until translucent over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Next, add 250 grams of rice, a teaspoon each of sweet & spicy paprika powder and 1 heaping teaspoon of savory, stir in and briefly allow to roast for a minute or so.
When that’s done, add the peppers, 1 can of chopped tomatoes, 200 grams of mild ajvar, 750 milliliters of water & 1 heaping teaspoon of salt, stir everything well once, bring to a boil & then simmer gently over low heat for 15 – 20 minutes, stirring occasionally .
As soon as the rice is cooked & the liquid has almost completely absorbed, stir in the thawed peas, also season the rice pan with salt & pepper and then serve garnished with chopped parsley. Have fun cooking!
