I have already shown you a variety of different bread and bread roll recipes, including delicious sweet potato rolls, cheesy pretzel sticks or super crispy & delicious German “Franzbrötchen”.
Today I will show you another bread roll recipe, today we’re baking a pull apart bread roll sun with cheese sauce, which we serve as a dip in the middle of the bread roll sun. Super easy to prepare & super tasty. Happy baking!

Baking Pull Apart Bread Roll “Sun” with Cheese Sauce
Ingredients for 8 – 10 bread rolls:
- 500 grams wheat flour
- 300 milliliters water
- ¼ cube fresh yeast (about 10 grams)
- A teaspoon each of salt & sugar for dough
- Possibly additional flour for countertop
- 75 grams melted butter
- 2 egg yolks for brushing
- Sesame seeds & black cumin seeds for sprinkling the bread rolls
- 300 milliliters milk
- 125 grams grated cheese (in this recipe cheddar & mozzarella cheese)
- A heaping teaspoon each of butter & flour for cheese sauce
- A teaspoon each of onion & garlic powder for cheese sauce
- Salt for cheese sauce
- Chili- or bell pepper flakes for garnish
Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:
- Mixing bowl
- Kitchen machine or mixer with dough hooks
- Small cup for melted butter
- Fork
- Baking sheet + baking paper
- Knife or dough card
- Brush + small cup for egg yolk
- Saucepan for cheese sauce
- Whisk
- Small cups for dipping sauce to serve
Instructions:

Crumble ¼ cube of yeast in a mixing bowl, also add 1 teaspoon of sugar & 300 milliliters of lukewarm water & stir everything with a whisk or a fork until the yeast & sugar have completely dissolved. Next, put 500 grams flour & 1 teaspoon salt in the mixing bowl & knead everything with a food processor or a mixer with dough hook for about 4 – 5 minutes to a smooth dough.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Melt 75 grams of butter in the microwave or on the stove. Divide the dough into about 25 – 30 small pieces with a knife or a dough scraper & shape into small balls or round under your palms on a lightly floured work surface.
Turn the dough balls one by one in the melted butter & then place them on the prepared baking sheet with a little distance to each other so that there is still enough space in the middle for a dip bowl. Cover the bread roll sun and let it rest in a warm place for 45 minutes until the dough volume has increased significantly.

Preheat the oven to 200°C (top/bottomheat) in good time. After the resting time, brush the rolls with whisked egg yolk, also sprinkle with sesame seeds and black cumin & then place in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until the rolls have taken on a nice golden brown colour.
Meanwhile, melt a heaping teaspoon of butter in a small saucepan. As soon as the butter has completely melted, add a heaping teaspoon of flour, mix butter & flour with a whisk & let it foam up briefly. Next, pour in 300 milliliters of milk, stir in until lumping free & season everything with 1 teaspoon each of onion and garlic powder and a good pinch of salt.

Preparing Cheese Sauce
Stir in the spices as well, bring everything to a boil, simmer for a few minutes over medium heat & stir occasionally until the milk thickens a bit & finally stir in the grated cheese & let it melt in the hot milk. Keep the cheese sauce warm over low heat on the stove until ready to serve, stirring occasionally.

After the baking time, take the rolls out of the oven, let them cool down briefly on the baking sheet, then place a small bowl in the middle of the roll sun & pour in the hot cheese sauce. Garnish the sauce with a few chili or paprika flakes & serve. Happy baking!
