Baked Gnocchi with Cheese Sauce

In today’s post, I’ll show you a simple & easy recipe for gnocchi with cheese sauce. The gnocchi are mixed with the cheese sauce and then baked in the oven as seen in the recipe for Mac & Cheese some monthes before.

For the sauce or the cheeses used there are a variety of different options, here a simple recipe with grated alpine or mountain cheese. Have fun cooking 🙂

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 kilogram gnocchi (from the refrigerated shelf)
  • 500 milliliters milk
  • 200 grams green peas (frozen)
  • 200 grams alpine or mountain cheese
  • 100 grams sour cream
  • 25 grams butter
  • 25 grams flour
  • 100 grams sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Salt & pepper
  • Fresh chives for garnishing

Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:

  • Saucepan for the cheese sauce
  • Whisk
  • Baking dish

Instructions:




…for the cheese sauce:

Give 25 grams butter into a saucepan & allow to melt over medium heat. Once the butter is completely melted & starts to foam add 25 grams flour & whisk together until well combined.

Next, pour in 150 milliliters milk & stir together with a whisk until free of flour lumps, then pour in the remaining 350 milliliters milk & stir together.




Season the sauce with 1 teaspoon mustard, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon nutmeg & a good pinch of salt & pepper, then bring to a boil over medium heat while stirring constantly.

Allow to simmer for about 2 – 3 minutes until the sauce thickens noticeable while stirring constantly with a whisk. Then remove the saucepan from heat & add the grated alpine cheese as well as 100 grams sour cream & allow the cheese to melt in the hot sauce.

Preheat the oven to 200°C (top/bottom heat). Spread the gnocchi into a suitable baking dish, cover with 200 grams frozen peas & then pour the cheese sauce over the gnocchi to comnpletely cover them with sauce. Bake the gnocchi for about 25 – 30 minutes in the preheated oven until the surface is golden brown & crispy.




Get the done gnocchi dish out of the oven, serve on plates & possibly garnish with some chopped chives. I wish you lots of fun cooking 😉
